He will not race, he will not romp, He saves his strength for gobble and chomp.

His name is not Roger, but the description fits him.

Roger the Dog

Asleep he wheezes at his ease.
He only wakes to scratch his fleas.
He hogs the fire, he bakes his head
As if it were a loaf of bread.
He’s just a sack of snoring dog.
You can lug him like a log.
You can roll him with your foot,
He’ll stay snoring where he’s put.
I take him out for exercise,
He rolls in cowclap up to his eyes.
He will not race, he will not romp,
He saves his strength for gobble and chomp.
He’ll work as hard as you could wish
Emptying his dinner dish,
Then flops flat, and digs down deep,
Like a miner, into sleep.

--Ted Hughes

This was today's poetry reading in our homeschool and it especially tickled my 15 year old son who is usually not a very big fan of our poetry book. I had to share it with you because, well, because it describes our Little Doggie so well.  He went missing this morning and after a thorough search of the house the kids found him in the exact spot pictured above.

His where about were no mystery to me. I knew exactly where to find his lazy, good for nothing self, but it is more fun for them to discover it themselves.

A few posts ago Robin asked me in the comments if I had read any good fiction lately.  The ones that come to mind are  The Help (which I really read last year but read again this year for book club) and before that To Kill a Mockingbird.  Of course, I loved Alexander McCall Smith's books I read earlier this year and miss reading those. Most of the other fiction I've read is from this school year (Sonlight 200) and I have mostly enjoyed them.

I recently read Hotel at the Corner of Bitter and Sweet and Elizabeth Goudge's Green Dolphin Street. Both were enjoyable enough.  I started reading A Separate Peace yesterday because my kids are reading it for school.

All that to say nothing really stands out as a Must Read and that is assuming you have read The Help and To Kill a Mockingbird.  They are both Must Reads in my book.

Do you have any good suggestions? What is the best fiction book you have read lately?

(I'm currently reading a few nonfiction books: The Holiness of God, A Circle of Quiet and I really enjoyed Crazy Love.)

Yes, Leslie, I did read the Help and To Kill a Mocking Bird.

I started reading Growing Up Amish last night. I will let you know if it's a good read or not when I am done.

I have Crazy Love on my list.

I love the poem and your little doggie. Maverick likes to sleep on our bed too when he can get away with it.

To Kill a Mockingbird is a great book! I read it in highschool English, and I still remember it. I'm hoping to read The Help over the holidays. I've heard so many great things about it.

Blessings!

To Kill a Mockingbird is one of my favorite books ever. Another favorite is A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Speaking of Brooklyn, I recently read the novel Brooklyn by Colm Toibin, and I'd recommend it highly.

Love your dog! He reminds me a lot of mine.

I loved A Circle of Quiet. I just read the sweetest Christmas book by Elizabeth Goudge called Sister of the Angels. I bought a vintage copy off Amazon. I'm reading lots of Christmas books this month. I'll be posting about them on my blog soon. Your dog is funny, and that poem sums him up nicely.

Not much reading going on right now. Just crafting!

Hello, lovely Leslie!
Little doggy is adorable!
I need to get my favorite blogs up again (you know I have the Childlike Christmas blogs on the sidebar and I didn't want to have two). I miss you!
I'm home now! Yippee! So I'll have lots of time to hop around and visit!
Your house looks fantastic!

Our next book club read is The Red Tent...it sounds interesting. I'll let you know after I've read it. I just finished Redbird Christmas, it was a fun, seasonal read. Happy days!

How sweet and cozy your little doggy looks! Great poem.
I recenlty finished reading Mansfield Park and enjoyed it much more than Sense and Sensibility. I think Jane Austin had improved a lot in between.

I reread To Kill a Mockingbird just this past summer. I have not read The Help even though I have seen the movie, but others too have told me I should read the book.

I have been enjoying reading some older books by D.E Stevenson, a series about Mrs. Tim, specifically
Mrs. Tim Carries On and Mrs. Tim Flies Home.

And of course, being Christmas I have checked out and am reading once again Miss Read's book about Christmas in Fairacre.

I know why you had to put down A Separate Peace. It is such a depressing book. I can't even remember much about it, but it made me sick to know that guy meant to make his friend fall. - I'm glad that you have listed good books to read. Since I have read some of them and liked them, I feel that I can trust your taste in the other ones! It is always very nice to read a book that comes highly recommended!
